ABOUT US

Founded in 2000 by Natalyia Gurin, Lyrica is a Barrie-based choral ensemble of approximately 30 singers dedicated to its mission: to inspire and enrich its community through the power of great choral music at the highest artistic level.

Under the masterful direction of Lucie Veillette, Lyrica presents a mix of styles, periods and languages at each concert, all tied together thematically.

Recent highlights include The Wound in the Water by Kim André Arnesen, Dawn King’s Requiem and songs by Ola Gjeilo. Professional soloists and instrumentalists regularly join Lyrica for performances. Our accompanist, Brent Mayhew, enhances the choir’s work with skill and sensitivity.

LUCIE VEILLETTE

MUSIC DIRECTOR

Lucie Veillette is the Music Director of Lyrica. She hails from Sherbrooke, Quebec. At a young age, Lucie excelled in piano, violin, flute, and dance. Later, she added percussion instruments to her repertoire by joining the drum and bugle corps. Lucie graduated from the University of Montreal, earning a Bachelor in Classical Interpretation.

In Montreal, she played for prestigious organizations such as the CBC Radio Choir, Metropolitan Orchestra Choir under the direction of Agnes Grossman (Vienna Boys Choir), and Les Disciples de Massenet with renowned movie music composer Marc Ouellet.

Lucie has also worked with actors for performances in theatre, television, and movies. At a Summer Theater Program in Saint-Eustache, she composed and played live music. She conducted the orchestra and large ensemble for Fiddler on the Roof. Lucie also accompanied auditions for the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (New York). She collaborated with international singers such as baritone Marc Boucher and Robert Marien (Jean Valjean in London’s production of Les Miserables). She was the exam accompanist for various universities and colleges in Quebec. In addition, she played with French pop singer Louise Forestier at the Festival en Chanson de Petite-Vallée. Lucie was also pianist, percussionist, and back-up vocalist for Marie-Claire Séguin, both on tour and on her album, Butterfly.

Lucie has arranged scores for Titanic, Les Misérables and Offenbach’s operettas. She was copyist for major symphonic orchestras across the country, while working with Canadian composer Blair Thomson.

In 2008, Lucie moved to Barrie. She accompanied the King Edward Choir and 2016 Choralfest production of Carmen. She played for York University Chamber Choir, and singer Angela Turner. Currently, she teaches art and specializes in French at an elementary school in CFB Borden.

Since 2022, Lucie has brought her artistry to Lyrica, and we are thrilled to have her at the helm!

Yuletide Fires

Christmas is around the corner and Lyrica has prepared something special. Works include carols by Rutter, Arnesen, Patriquin, and Loomer. Get into the holiday spirit with a sparkling celebration of the season. We will invite you to join in as we sing some favourite carols together!

CONCERT SERIES

The 2023/2024 concert season marks Lyrica’s twenty-fourth anniversary. Since its inception, Lyrica continues to present beautiful harmonies, choral classics and modern masterpieces. Our season includes three concerts and community outreach.

Celebrating Fauré

Renowned French composer Gabriel Fauré created some of the world’s most distinguished music. This year marks the 100th anniversary of his death. Lyrica will present some of Fauré’s most acclaimed pieces including Requiem and Pavane. These demonstrate the simplicity and clarity of his compositional style.

Series Discover

In our final concert of this series, Lyrica will explore works that may be lesser known. We will feature Charles Villiers Stanford’s Three Latin Motets and Patrick Hawes’ beloved Beatitudes. You will enjoy the unique character of each verse as piano weaves through melody, texture, and style.
